It was obvious that Seth's life had recently turned into a freaking mess.
Well, it had certainly become messy than ever before.
However, despite all the problems with his job, his so-called girlfriend and his family, Seth Monaghan wanted only to have a good night's rest just for once; and of course, everything that was so annoying, every day of the past few months grew into a nightmare every night. Seth didn't care though. Just like every time before, when push came to shove Seth was always able to at least try to forget about the troubles and simply, as you say, survive.
He didn't want to talk to anybody.
He actually didn't want to see anybody.
Unfortunately, man proposes, God disposes.

4 a.m.
Seth Monaghan slept like a log and nothing could wake him up, at least without consequences.
Okay, nothing except the loud noise, definitely unexpected at that time.
Seth jumped out of bed in a fraction of a second, ready to kill anyone who thought it was great to make such a noise in the middle of the night. Well, maybe not to kill literally, but who knows; after all, it was Seth Monaghan, and his actions sometimes defied any explanation when he was completely burned out. So he took the gun and went to the anteroom, trying to keep his movement completely silent. Monaghan could only think about a usual robbery or something like that, but just as Seth was about to get to the noise source, he suddenly heard someone breaking out into abuse.
A lot of obscenities, actually; and the voice sounded really familiar.
Too familiar.

'Oh, crap! Chase, really?'
Needless to say, it wash't a burglar or any other criminal, although it better would be; it was just Seth's big brother, so damn darling.
'Okay, I don't really expect a rational answer, but anyway', Seth said; he lowered the gun and leant against the wall, staring blankly at Chase, 'anyway. What the hell? What on Earth could you be doing here and', at the moment Seth paid attention to his own front door, which was actually dumped on the floor at his brother's feet, 'wow, great. Awesome, totally awesome.' Seth's voice was literally dripping with sarcasm. 'So you came here to break my fucking door while you were supposed to leave DC, don't you remember that, ha?'
Seth Monaghan wearily rubbed his hands over his face; he seemed totally like a man who didn't give a fuck about that devilry in his apartment and his big brother who deigned to make a visit.
Truth to be told, Seth didn't want to be astonished or something.
He wanted to aim the gun at Chase and pull the damn trigger.
Right now.

It was so not how he imagined it.
No, seriously, it should have happened any other possible way, but not like that.
Monaghan scratched his beard, looking at the door besides his feet. The door he’s hit out. Chase cursed under his breath, trying to get his thoughts together and realise one tiny thing: how the hell he’d managed to knock at this door that awesomely, that it sorta fell out of the doorway.
One more fucking mystery to solve.
Welcome to the life of Chase Monaghan.
On the way to Seth’s place he pictured a very different scene in his head. A scene that was far less comedic and should have turned out to be far less dramatic for his little old self. At least in his imagination the door was still in place and Chase was not thinking about the way to make it all look any better.
Not that he could remember exactly what that scene looked like.
It was just.. different. He saw himself visiting his brother in a great mood, having a good talk before remembering that he’s not really in a position to visit people he cared for and leaving with a usual ‘okay, see you later, bro’, never knowing exactly when that ‘later’ could happen.
Another day, another year, another life.
Blah-blah-blah.
Planning stuff like that was not an option for Chase Monaghan and he was well aware of that.
Well, he was also aware of crazy stuff that drunk folk do, too, but he had never been in those shoes until now.
He was capable of drinking himself to such a sad drunk state so rarely, that he didn’t even remember when it happened for the last time. It felt like he’d never actually been this drunk. It started in the most innocent way (like it happens all the time, doesn’t it?) with a couple of beers and a nice story to tell and a fun story to hear, but then this small talk changed to be this drinking contest with whiskey that led him here, to his little brother’s apartment in the middle of the night in a way he didn’t really remember.
Not that he really tried to.
Tell you the truth: he couldn’t care less.
Okay, that was a lie.
He couldn’t care less until Seth appeared in a doorway, looking pretty sleepy and extremely dissatisfied with such a look on his face, that Chase couldn’t resist mirroring it.
‘Oh, crap, Seth, really?’ echoed Monaghan, rolling his eyes, ‘I’d prefer ‘Hey, bro, how’s it going’ much better, but, yeah, okay. That’s nice enough, too.’ he didn’t really bother minding his own tone, let alone the circumstances. Chase sounded like his brother was the guilty one here and there was nothing in the world that could actually change his opinion, ‘I’m happy to see you too. Dumbass.’
And while Seth was examining the renovations in his boring hallway design, that definitely looked much more exceptional with a front door lying in the middle of it, than being on it’s previous spot, Chase made a few steps forward to pass his brother (totally ignoring his disapproval) in a businesslike way heading to the kitchen.
‘Awesome?’ asked Chase not paying close attention to what Seth was referring to, ‘Yup, I know, I look good enough. Considering,’ he opened several kitchen drawers, searching for a coffee jar, ‘I’m supposed to do lots of things, bro, but you know me. I enjoy surprising my people,’ he smiled to himself and turned around to meet his brother’s eyes, ‘and a host’s supposed to offer his guest a drink.’
Sober Chase Monaghan would probably hit drunk Chase Monaghan in a face.
But drunk Chase Monaghan doesn’t give a flying damn about what he says, when he says it and to whom.
‘Just make me some coffee and I’ll try to make it easier for you to pretend that you’re glad to see me. Deal?’

Seth Monaghan was pretty sure that his big brother would have looked really more appropriate somewhere else.
In hell, for example.
Unfortunately, Chase seemed quite happy here and clearly unwilling to go out of Seth's apartment; so basically Seth had no choice but to accept the inevitable and reply to some shit his big brother was talking about, 'Hey, bro, how's it going?' he made a mock of Chase quickly, giving a grimace which obviously represented Seth's mood, 'I'm happy to see you alive and not being a jail-bird for once. dickhead', Seth said with the same false smile.
Really, Chase was acting like Seth owed him something, and it irritated Monaghan most of all. Well, besides the other crap, starting with Chase's presence.
'You look like shit', noticed Monaghan, suddenly paying attention to something different about his brother's behavior, though it still was as awful as usual, 'and you are drunk, right? Unbeliavable.' Seth shook his head, 'you're unbelievable and you know it. The worst thing is - you're totally proud of yourself', he drawled with a voice full of suffering, while looking at Chase and his shitty smile. Okay, Seth could't doubt the fact that the big brother was already there and there were not many chances to change the situation completely, so there was no sense in bothering. But still, Seth worried about his front door, or he could better say, about the absence of his front door.
'You're so not my guest', replied Seth crossly, going to the kitchen. 'So make yourself comfortable', but of course Chase had done it already, 'and make coffee or whatever on your own, okay?'
Honest to God, that morning Seth could tell exactly that the most annoying person on the planet was Chase Monaghan and no one but him. However, Chase looked like he thought of himself as the prettiest man alive, and there was nobody to make Chase change his mind, not even his little brother; not even his little brother with the gun.
Typical Chase Monaghan.
'There was a jar of powdered coffee somewhere', Seth waved his arm towards the drawers, then leant against the wall again and tried to imagine that none of that crap was happening.
Surely, with no result.
'Drink your coffee and do something with my door, deal? 'Cause in case if you don't know, it's unsafe not to have a front door in Washington, my dear brother', Seth demanded, looking at Chase intently. Monaghan was trying not to say anything else, because maybe his big brother would be frightened of silence and think that it's too boring to stay at Seth's place. But unfortunately Seth really had something to say, 'and tell me now, what the hell are you really doing here. Did anything happen? Is there anything you want? Just now it seems that you only want to bother me, and you know, I'm sick of it, Chase', but of course his brother didn't pay any attention to that, although Seth was still about to continue the accusations, 'I'm sick of my brother showing no respect to the only people who give a shit about him', Seth smiled bitterly.
'So happy to see you, brother. Welcome home.'

Okay-okay. Monaghan could admit that it’s not the brightest moment of his life.
Chase rolled his eyes, listening to Seth’s speech, that surely would make him feel uncomfortable as hell, if he could actually care about it more, being this drunk. Some phrases hit him in a way all the Monaghans of this family knew they could, however Chase knew better than to open his mouth.
He knew better, he really did.
But - how unfortunate! - couldn’t help himself.
’Well, look at him! He’s sick of me!’ Chase exclaimed, continuing opening and closing the drawers in Seth’s kitchen in a simple attempt to find that coffee jar his brother told him about ‘He’s sick and he has a bloody lot to say about it.’
Sometimes, Monaghan dared to hope that his brother and Chase himself had already told each other all those vile things they had in their minds about the other, but every time shit like that blew up, it turned out that they still had a fucking lot of stuff to enlighten each other’s moods. It’s so touching and so pathetic that it actually hurts.
Turning around to face Seth, Monaghan hit his hip at the corner of the table, not looking under his feet, being incautious as they go. He became still for several moments, holding all the cursing together and gathering all his name-calling thoughts in some dark place of his imagination, to choose words wisely.
‘Well, news-flash, bro, I may have no fucking idea how i got here and what came up in my mind about this visit, but, guess what!’ he closed the last drawer shut in the most theatrical way possible ‘I actually do miss my little brother as well as I miss my whole family, while being in some god forsaken middle of terrific nowhere!’
Chase clapped his hands and exhaled, trying to find that 'stone number one' in his life, that was meant to calm himself in such circumstances, failing miserably, of course. He watched Seth for several moments, carefully deciding the course of his future actions, but nothing seemed to be wright. Thankfully, his little brother gave him a really nice advice himself.
‘Okay, that sounded too dramatic. Forget it’ Monaghan waved his hand carelessly ‘You know what? I really should at least try to fix your door now. And if you’re kind enough and truly do give a shit about my well-being, please, bro, please make me some coffee. That will be mind-blowing.’
Chase pat his brother’s shoulder on his way back to the front door that was still lying there pitifully. It was really naive of Chase to hope that it’d take it’s place while he’s busy in the kitchen, but, lets face it, who wouldn’t hope so?
